Fiction
China is fragile and should only to be used at formal events, holidays and special occasions.
Fact!
Modern couples use their fine china and glassware on a much more regular basis. You should absolutely use your china and not store it away like past generations. If you are having a couple over for drinks and appetizers, consider using your decorative charger plates for cheese and fruit, and good wine certainly tastes better out of a nice glass!

How much do I need?
It is customary to order a service of 12, five-piece place settings as a minimum. And for the frequent entertainer, it is even better to have extra place settings on hand. The extras come in handy in the event you have last-minute additions to your table or if tragedy strikes and a piece gets damaged.
What is included in a five-piece set?
It includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, and cup and saucer.
What is a 16-piece set?
It includes a dinner service for four, with mugs in place of cups and saucers. It does not include accessories like platters or bowls.
What is a 20-piece set?
It includes dinner service for four with cups and saucers. It does not include accessories like platters or bowls.
Christina Suggests . . .
A five-piece place setting will give you all the necessary shapes to serve basic meals. But consider adding rim soup bowls for soups or soft desserts. You'll probably also need at least two platters and two serving bowls to start (more if you love to entertain!). And, think about dessert as a separate activity. Consider choosing a complementary pattern for your dessert and coffee pieces. Finally, don't be afraid to bend the rules and customize based on your lifestyle; for example, you may decide against a teacup and saucer in favor of something more causal, like a mug.
